Health promotion is a vital strategy for improving quality of life and combating social determinants of health. In Santo André, obesity is a significant challenge, affecting a substantial portion of the population. This work aims to disseminate and implement the guidelines of the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population in combating obesity, within a context of respect for universality, equity, comprehensiveness, decentralization, and popular participation.
To tackle obesity, raising awareness among the population about healthy eating habits is fundamental. In this regard, workshops on permanent education and health promotion were conducted, involving collaborators from Primary Health Care (PHC), Specialized Care, and managers. A highlight was the creation of the Obesity Nucleus (NO) for severe cases referred by PHC, aiming at a specialized approach. The formation of a municipal commission allowed for the evaluation and discussion of activities, ensuring integrated care. Educational materials were developed, and training sessions were conducted, involving healthcare professionals, volunteers, and SUS users. Partnership with the ABC School of Medicine (FMABC) strengthened actions, expanding the reach and effectiveness of interventions. Community engagement was promoted through collective actions in territories, including cooking workshops and events such as the First Care Arraial. This event, held in 2023, emphasized the importance of health promotion and healthy eating, highlighting the role of humanized care in health and was attended by workers, volunteers, and local health counselors.
The results were promising, with the expansion of the offer of collective actions in territories and the launch of the Health in Motion Program in 2024. This itinerant program brought health services and disease prevention awareness to different areas of the city. Additionally, collective actions were carried out in public spaces, encouraging the practice of physical activities and integrative and complementary practices.
Health promotion and care production in a network are essential to prevent diseases such as obesity. It is essential to ensure that these actions respect the principles of SUS. The support of the Santo André City Hall and collaboration between different sectors were crucial for the success of these initiatives. Continuing to invest in this integrated approach is essential to promote a healthier and more resilient community.
