It has been ten years since natural gas exploration began in Maranhao. Still, the state has faced challenges in establishing the necessary infrastructure for a strong natural gas market that serves consumers. Transport infrastructure limitations and inflexible contractual agreements with the electricity generation sector have contributed to this deficiency. This research aims to analyse the potential for a viable natural gas market in Maranhao by examining the success of the Amazonas state. The process involves gathering data from secondary sources and creating an energy matrix for the state. The analysis reveals that a significant demand for natural gas, estimated at 2 million cubic meters per day, is mainly present in the industrial and transportation sectors. The limitations are primarily on the supply side of the market, rather than being constrained by demand-side phenomena.
