Evaluation of synergism between Opuntia ficus and Rosa canina in the vascular reactivity of Wistar rats

  Introduction: Medicinal plants are used to treat several cardiovascular disorders, and phytotherapy is an important branch of pharmacology concerning the use of drugs with fewer side effects. We saw the importance of synergism in the construction of phytotherapy, to exert a multi-target function within a given pathology. Aim: To study the vasodilator effect of isolated extracts of Opuntia ficus and Rosa canina. Also, the synergism between the two plants. Methods: It was performed a vascular reactivity experiment, by using twenty male Wistar rats (180 to 200 g). The cumulative concentration curve was performed to standardized extracts association from O. ficus and R. canina in aortic rings with (E+) and without endothelium (E-), and the isolated extracts with and without endothelium. Data were presented as mean values ± SEM and were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by a Newman-Keuls post-test. We had considered statistically significant p <0.01. Results: Association of Extracts from O. ficus and R. canina induces vasodilation, that is potentiated by endothelium (E+): -0,8187 ± 0,03314, n = 6; compared without endothelium (E-): -1,308 ± 0,06519, n = 6. However, when isolated, only O. ficus showed a difference in the maximum vasodilator effect (EMax) (E+): 101,5 ± 6,458, n = 5; EMax (E-): 88,36 ± 7,902, n = 5. But no difference in pD2 (E+: -1,377 ; E-: -1,353). While R. canina showed no difference between pD2 and EMax from the different aortic preparations pD2: (E+): -1,306 ± 0,06823, n = 5; (E-): -1,331 ± 0,0914, n = 5. Emax: (E+): 96,48 ± 4,134, n = 5; (E-): 94,36 ± 5,36, n = 5. Conclusion: Comparing the pD2 and Emax values of the association of plants with the related isolated values, the synergistic effect was verified, and we could conclude that the combination of the two phytoactive potentiates the vasodilator effect.
