Introduction
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, which affects approximately 90-95% of patients with diabetes. The only non-pharmacological intervention capable of preventing the development and progression of T2D is dietary modification and physical training. However, the exact mechanism leading disease improvement is not fully understood. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of physical training on the complications and progression of T2D.
Métodos
C57BL6 mice were fed either a high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet for type 2 diabetes-inducing (T2D) or a normocaloric (CTL) diet for 36 weeks. For 12 weeks, a subgroup of T2D (T2D EX) and CTL (CTL EX) animals underwent aerobic physical training. At the end of the protocol, metabolic parameters, glycemic homeostasis, advanced glycation end products (AGE) levels, steatosis severity, fibrosis and liver and adipose tissue microcirculation parameters were evaluated in all groups.
Results
The T2D EX group showed a decrease in body weight, blood pressure and an improvement in glucose metabolism compared to the CTL group. Physical training was able to reverse the presence of hepatic steatosis/fibrosis and changes in liver and adipose tissue microcirculation. The training protocol was also able to decrease the AGE levels and the percentage of ?-smooth muscle actin (?-SMA), a marker of hepatic stellate cell activation.
Conclusion
We conclude that physical training may ameliorates T2D complications by modulating microcirculatory dysfunction and AGEs levels.
