Introduction: The Western diet is associated with the development of heart disease by promoting metabolic changes and oxidative stress (OE). Among the various therapies involved, resistance training (RT) can be used as a non-pharmacological alternative. Objective: To evaluate the effect of RT on OE and cardiac alterations in rats with Western diet-induced cardiomyopathy. Methodology: Wistar rats (n=40, ± 180g) distributed in 2 groups (n=20) to receive control chow + natural water (control group, C) or chow rich in simple carbohydrates and fat + 25% of sucrose in water (group high-sugar-fat diet, HSF). After 20 weeks the animals were redistributed into four groups: untrained (C, n=10 and HSF, n=10) and trained (C + resistance training [C+RT], n=10 and HSF group + resistance training [HSF+TR], n=10). In the 20th and 28th week the cardiac function was analyzed by echocardiographic analysis. In the 28th week, malondialdehyde (MDA), a product of oxidative stress, was also quantified in the heart. The RT was performed 5x/weeks/8 weeks, it consisted of 4 stair climbs with a gradual increase in load, 1x50%, 1x75%, 1x90% and 1x100% of the maximum capacity verified in maximum exercise capacity test; recovery between each climb was 1 minute. Statistics: two-way or on-ranks ANOVA, p<0.05. Results: At the 20th week, the HSF group had concentric cardiac remodeling (CR) and systolic and diastolic dysfunction. In the 28th week, the RT increased the functional capacity, measured by the maximum exercise capacity test. The RT did not reverse the concentric CR, however, it reduced the decrease in the diastolic function, observed in the E/e’ ratio; decreased systolic impairment characterized by ejection fraction, % endocardial shortening and posterior wall shortening velocity; and decreased MDA concentration in the myocardium. Conclusion: RT reduced cardiac dysfunction and oxidative stress in rats with Western diet-induced cardiomyopathy. CEUA: 1333/2019. CNPq:141000/2020-1.
