PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY APPLIED TO MEDICINAL SPECIES

    Plant biotechnology consists on the integration of different fields of science to allow the use of the technological potential of plants. Among them, plant tissue culture is a valuable tool to support the utilization of medicinal species. The obtainment of in vitro materials has application on production, conservation and assessment of the medicinal potential of plant species. These approaches will provide a continuous supply of plant materials, with reduction in time as compared to conventional methods. Additionally, they will result in a better knowledge of Brazilian biodiversity, while reducing predatory extraction of plants from their original environments. Along with the establishment of conditions for in vitro propagation, protocols of cryopreservation as well as phytochemical and pharmacological analyzes can be applied. The activities are developed at the Center of Plant Biotechnology of UERJ (NBV/UERJ), within the following research lines: in vitro production and conservation of plants and secondary metabolites of medicinal and agronomic interest; use of molecular markers to assess genetic stability of plant material and phytochemical and pharmacological potential of plant material produced under in vivo and in vitro conditions. The studies carried out on the six labs that belongs to NBV/UERJ are mailnly supported by Carlos Chagas Filho Research Support Foundation - FAPERJ.
