NEUROPROTECTIVE AND ANTIOXIDANT EFFECTS OF Maranta arundinacea AND Porophyllum ruderale EXTRACTS IN Caenorhabditis elegans

    Among Brazilian diversity, many species are used as food and medicinal. Maranta arundinacea (MA) is a non-conventional-food from which starch is extracted from rhizome. Some medicinal proprieties are assigned to MA leaves which currently are underutilized.  Porophyllum ruderale (PR) is an aromatic herb widely distributed in Latin America. Its leaves have a characteristic flavour and are used for food and medicinal purposes. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant and neuroprotective activities of MA and PR leaf methanolic extracts using Caenorhabditis elegans (CE), as an animal model. For this purpose, we used a CE model of Machado-Joseph disease, expressing a human mutant ATXN-3. Our data showed that chronic treatment with 0,75 mg/ mL of MA and PR extracts had a beneficial impact in these diseases since it significantly ameliorated the locomotor defects exhibited by CE. We observed a significant protection against juglone induced oxidative damage (by more than 80%), after treatment with these extracts. We concluded that MA and PR extracts obtained in the specific cultivation conditions show enhanced the resistance to oxidative stress induced by Jugulone and increase motility of CE model (q130 and CK 10). Our findings support an neuroprotective and antioxidant activity of MA and PR.
