  • Abstract
  • Introduction: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is often asymptomatic in its early stages, which leads to frequent diagnoses at advanced stages, significantly compromising accurate staging and appropriate clinical management of patients. It is estimated that Brazil registers approximately 10,980 new cases of PC annually, highlighting the high morbidity and mortality rates attributed to both the aggressive nature of this adenocarcinoma and the delayed initiation of treatment. In this context, there is a growing need to understand the epidemiological foundations of this condition. Objectives: To analyze the number of hospitalizations and mortality rates of women with PC in the Northern Region of Brazil between 2020 and 2024. Methods: This is an epidemiological, descriptive, retrospective, and quantitative study using secondary data from the Hospital Information System of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SIH/SUS), managed by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DataSUS). Data were collected on hospitalizations and mortality rates due to PC in women aged 20 years and older, from 2020 to 2024, in the Northern Region of Brazil. The variables analyzed were region and age group. Data were organized in spreadsheets and subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, including absolute and relative frequencies, as well as hospitalization and mortality rates standardized per 100,000 inhabitants. Results:Throughout the analyzed period, 1,169 hospitalizations were identified based on the previously selected variables. The highest incidence of hospitalizations was observed in the state of Rondônia (43), while the lowest rates were found in Amapá (8.44) and Roraima (8.5). Rondônia and Tocantins recorded the highest mortality rates among the states in the region (9.5 and 6.5, respectively), whereas Amapá had the lowest rate (2.1). The age group with the highest number of hospitalizations was 60 to 69 years (30.45%), followed by 50 to 59 years (22.07%) and 70 to 79 years (20.1%). The highest mortality rates occurred in the age groups above 80 years (42.31%) and between 70 and 79 years (36.17%). Conclusion: It is concluded that PC presents high lethality and a growing epidemiological trend among women in the Northern Region of Brazil, as evidenced by the significant number of hospitalizations and high mortality rates in states such as Rondônia and Tocantins. This scenario is driven, in part, by the persistence of modifiable risk factors, including Diabetes Mellitus, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Disparities in morbidity and mortality rates reflect challenges in accessing healthcare services and the lack of effective screening strategies, aggravating clinical outcomes, particularly in the most affected areas. Advancing age is closely associated with increased hospitalization and mortality rates, mainly in age groups over 60 years, resulting from prolonged exposure to risk factors and the decline of the antitumor defense system, reinforcing the challenges of geriatric oncology care. Given this context, it is crucial to strengthen the integrated action of the multiprofessional team to promote earlier diagnoses — even considering the insidious clinical presentation of the disease — aiming to improve prognosis and reduce lethality.

It is with great enthusiasm that we present the Annals of the Oncology International Symposium 2025, an event that continues to solidify its significance in the oncology landscape of northern Brazil. Held in Belém, Pará, Oncology 2025 centered around the theme "The cancer control challenge: better knowing it to best facing it," dedicating itself to exploring the latest frontiers in cancer treatment and prevention.

This year, the symposium provided a deep dive into the essential role of knowledge in the fight against cancer, presenting new perspectives and scientific advancements across various areas of oncology. Renowned global experts gathered to share their most recent research and innovative approaches, offering participants a comprehensive view of the challenges faced by healthcare professionals and patients worldwide.

Presentations and discussions during the event focused on critical topics such as the use of new technologies, advancements in personalized therapies, and more effective prevention strategies. Additionally, particular attention was given to the unique challenges faced by the Amazon region, with efforts aimed at developing region-specific solutions to meet local needs.

Beyond being a high-caliber academic event, Oncology 2025 stood out as a moment for integration and professional networking, with the warm hospitality of the city of Belém offering participants a unique experience. This event became a platform for exchanging ideas, where science, culture, and humanity came together in pursuit of a common goal: to improve cancer control both in Brazil and globally.

This collection of abstracts and articles presented during the event reflects the ongoing dedication to research and the development of innovative solutions, highlighting the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge in the fight against cancer.
