  • Coastal reefs are colonized by a high diversity of macrofaunal species associated with macroalgae and are exposed to significant variations in environmental conditions, such as climatic variations of dry and rainy seasons. This study aimed to analyze the macrofaunal response to the different macroalgal species and to seasonal dry and rainy seasons from 2020 to 2022 on the northeast coast of Brazil. A total of 60 samples of Gelidiella acerosa and Padina spp. were collected in Enseada dos Corais beach in Pernambuco. A total of 13,002 macrofaunal specimens were recorded associated with macroalgae, belonging to the phylum Arthropoda (67%), Mollusca (17%), Annelida (14%), Platyhelminthes (2%), and Cnidaria (<1%). A typical faunal composition of the coastal zone of Pernambuco. There were significates variations in the macrofaunal community between macroalgal species (pseudo-F: 7.17; p:<0.01 - similarity: 30.63) and between seasons (pseudo-F: 6.10; p:<0.01 - similarity: 29.81). These variations were related as a response of macrofaunal to macroalgal characteristics, such as chemical composition and fractal complexity, that can influence the microhabitat provisioning and weaken the periphyton growth, and with the variations of precipitation, nutrients, desiccation and salinity generated by the dry and rainy seasons. These factors, mainly in rainy season, for most species represent more favorable environmental conditions for feeding and the initiation of reproduction, except for molluscs due to the scraping feeding habits of these species, the reproductive behavior, and the osmotic sensitivity decreased their population. For macrofauna, adaptation to substrate types and to seasonality were determinants factors to the different fluctuation behaviors on the coastal reef from the northeast of Brazil.
