Introduction: Obesity is constantly expanding and is increasing at all ages and is associated with a number of degenerative diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. Adipocytes are influenced by several substances, and secrete numerous peptides, which may act directly or indirectly on the cardiovascular system. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes that degrades various extracellular matrix proteins, which play an important role to tissue remodeling, including adipocytes that are enlarged and dysfunctional in the obesity. Objective: Investigate, in the scientific literature and evaluate the relationships of obesity and the triggering of pro-inflammatory markers, highlighted in the metalloproteinases of the extracellular matrix and its mechanisms of action. Since the search for pro-inflammatory markers has an important prognostic value for cardiovascular diseases. Methods A comparative review of the literature. Results: The physiological interaction between adipocytes and the various proteins that make up the extracellular matrix are associated with the metabolic consequences of obesity. Excessive collagen deposition causes chronic tissue damage under pathological conditions and is defined as a fibrotic condition. studies with MMPs and adipokines still need greater scope to explore their relationship in obesity, the correlation of MMP-2 with adiponectin and leptin has been shown to be consistent. Conclusion: Adipocyte remodeling seems to be associated with the increase in MMPs in obesity. There is an increase in the volume of adipocytes associated with a reduction in collagen deposition, mainly due to the increase in MMP-14, MMP-2, MMP-8 and perhaps other MMPs that have not yet been widely studied. In addition to morphology, MMPs can contribute to weight gain by interfering with adiponectin and adipokines through mechanisms related to the signaling of these adipokines. The inhibition of MMPs was favorable in experimental studies. Therefore, in the future they can be considered as biomarkers of the risk of cardiovascular diseases in obesity.
