• Introduction: Asthma is a health problem that affects all age groups, being a complex and heterogeneous syndrome, characterized by chronic airway inflammation, mucus hypersecretion and bronchial hyperresponsiveness to various stimuli, resulting in intermittent airflow obstruction that it is often reversible, spontaneously or with treatment. Asthma and systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) are common diseases and are often found together. Several studies have suggested that asthmatic individuals are more likely to have SAH than non-asthmatic individuals. However, this association is still poorly understood. Objectives: To test the association between SAH and clinical variables of patients with asthma. Methods: Patients from the Asthma Clinic of a philanthropic hospital in Vitória-ES were interviewed as part of the Asthma Genetics Project (Ethics Committee nº045/2010). Were obtained: the Informed Consent Term, blood samples, sociodemographic data, family history, anthropometric data, clinical diagnosis, asthma severity, comorbidities, spirometry results, biochemical and skin tests. Statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS® software 25.0 and p<0.05 was adopted. Results: After screening, data from 270 patients, 224 (83.0%) women and 46 (17.0%) men, were analyzed. The mean age was 50.4 years (18-79) and the mean age of the first crisis was 17.0 years (0-71). 126 (46.7%) patients suffer from SAH. 117 patients have severe asthma (43.3%), 104 (38.5%) moderate and 49 (18.1%) mild. Association of SAH was found with age, diabetes, obesity and BMI (p = 0.000, in all), GERD (p = 0.001), childhood asthma (p = 0.022), age of first crisis (p = 0.018) and reaction to skin tests (p = 0.039). Conclusion: The data presented strengthens the hypothesis that inflammation in patients with asthma may contribute to SAH. However, it is possible that this association is related to drugs used in the treatment of asthma or, also, to the fact that asthma is related to cardiovascular risk factors, such as BMI.
