Indigofera suffruticosa: POSSIBLE EFFECTIVE BAIT ASSOCIATION TO REDUCE Aedes aegypti POPULATION

  • INTRODUCTION 

    Population control of Aedes aegypti, the main vector of Dengue, Yellow Fever, Chikungunya and Zika, still remains one of the main public health challenges. the methodologies applied in the National Dengue Control Program have not efficiently fulfilled their objectives of monitoring and controlling explosive populations of mosquitoes, as they still prioritize the use of chemical insectcides and ignore the integrated vector control strategies recommended by the World Health Organization. In this sense, behavioral studies are highlighted, which involve the evaluation of oviposition baits, as when associated with traps and biolarvicides, they promote results that help in the monitoring and population control of mosquitoes.

    AIMS 

    To evaluate the aqueous extract of Indigofera suffruticosa as an oviposition stimulant for Aedes aegypti under laboratory conditions. 

    METHODS 

    The plant material was collected in the neighborhood of Gaibu Cabo de Santo Agostinho - PE. An exsiccate was cataloged and is the IPA Herbarium - Dárdano de Andrade Lima under number 94991. The extract was obtained through maceration in distilled water at a concentration of 0,1 mg/ml. Then the extract was transferred to an amber glass bottle and kept under anaerobc conditions for 48h. Subsequently, the extract was subbjected to vacuum filtration and evaluated at concentrations of 50 and 100%. To evaluate the extract as oviposition bait choice bioassavs were carried out using cages suitable for containing mosquitoes. In this way, twenty pregnant females of Aedes aegypti (RecLab lineage, maintained in the FIOCRUZ-PE insectary) were transferred to cages, available for oviposition in two sites: Test (container treated with I. suffruticosa extract at concentrations of 50 or 100%), control (container with distilled water). After three days, the containers were collected and the eggs were counted with 6 repetitions For statistical analysis, the paired T test was used and oviposition activity was determined by the Oviposition Activity Index (OAI).

    RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 

    As a result, a vield of 84% was obtained, demonstrating a brownish color and highlighting the presence of saponins due to the large formation of foam during filtration. Thus, after countings the eggs it was observed that there was a significant difference between the number of eggs place in the test container with 50% extract (77,07%) and control (22,97%), IAO = +0,54. At 100% concentration there was no significant difference between the number of eggs laid in the test container (52,72%) and control container (47,27%), IAO = +0,05.

    CONCLUSION 

    Indigofera suffruticosa extract at a concentration of 50% proved to be an oviposition stimulant for Aedes aegypti. The extract has potential for evaluation in traps as oviposition bait associated with the biological larvicide Bti which can promote an attractive and lethal combination, and demonstrates the prospect of being a viable alternative in integrated mosquito management.
