The present work corresponds to the first steps of local lichenologists to formally contribute to the knowledge of the diversity of lichens in Paraguay. The objective of this project is to generate a detailed checklist of the lichens of Paraguay. Previous attempts have relied only on internationally published articles from foreign specialists. This first checklist relies on the information of already published data in local and international journals, data from the collections of local and international herbaria and data from the new school of lichenologist that is being formed in Paraguay. Until now, 46 articles have been consulted which are directly concerned with local collections, but many more exist where specimens that were collected in Paraguay have been used in taxonomic studies. Additional to these, there are unpublished thesis that are also have important contributions not previously noted. Lichen collections in Paraguay are found in the following herbaria: FCQ, MNHNP, SCP, FACEN. These herbaria will be inventoried using the Consortium of Latin American Lichen Herbaria database. Local collections have already been started in the departments of Central, Cordillera, Paraguarí y Alto Paraná. In the near future, and for this project, field trips to the different ecoregions of the country have been planned. Up to now there are 218 reported lichens in the Feuerer checklist of 2017. We have added with our findings a 21 % more.
