About the Event

A "glass ceiling" is a metaphor, typically applied to minorities, used to represent an invisible barrier that keeps a given demographic group from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy. In medicine, students have to overcome a lot of barries to become great doctors, especially those individuals who belog to minorities. Therefore, we believe that our keynote speakers and sensitization activities can help the participants to prepare themselves for the challenges that await them, as well as to reflect on social, racial, gender, religious and many other differences.

The Brazilian International Congress of Medical Students BRAINCOMS is a life-changing experience for yourself and for your academic life. It is an unique opportunity to learnfrom amazing internationally renowned keynote speakers, practiceyour skills at hands-on workshops, buildup networks with other medical students from around the world, getin touch with sensitization activities and much more! Have you ever got the chance to be in touch with microsurgery? Do you know its uses?

From orthopedics to plastic surgery, microsurgery has grown its uses among many specialties. In short, it is a sub-specialty needed for the most delicate body parts, the ones typical surgical instruments would normally damage them.

This workshop will consist of a theoretical class followed by a hands-on practice that will give you the chance to manipulate the surgical microscope and the sensitive instruments used in this kind of procedures.

You will also learn the technique of microsurgical suture and how to perform vascular microanastomosis. Come develop delicacy and precision with us.

2) Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Guerra Sobongi

15h00 Neurosurgery - Day 2 Workshop
Neurosurgery - Day 2
Place: Hospital São Paulo 6th floor and Neuroanatomy Laboratory

Have you ever had any experience in neurosurgery? If you are interested, this is the right time for you to have contact with this field. You will have the chance to learn a lot about one of the most fundamental things in neurosurgery: neuroanatomy.

Let’s start with neuroanatomy teoric class with 3D screens and, to complement the theoric learning, the dissection of white fibers will make you feel in practice what you know about neuroanatomy.

We have the largest Microneurosurgical Anatomy laboratory in Latin America, comprising 21 stations with high resolution microscopes, surgical instruments for microdissection and much more.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn much more about this fascinating area of medicine!

Osteosynthesis - Day 2
Place: Centro de Habilidades (Octávio de Carvalho) - Rua Botucatu, 840

The stabilization of a fracture can be the initial approach to a treatment or even a life-saving procedure! You will learn about the principles of fracture fixation; the instruments used in an orthopedic surgery and develop this important technique by practicing on custom fractured models. Join us in one of our most practical workshops.

15h00 Pathology - Day 2 Workshop
Pathology - Day 2
Place: Macroscopy Room - Underground of Ed. Lemos Torres (Rua Botucatu, 740 - Vila Clementino)

Are you prepared to face a pathology in a completely different way? Come and participate in a necropsy case analysis meeting!

In this workshop, we have presentations of clinical cases of necropsied patients in the hospital, analyzing their medical history from their hospitalization until the moment of their death, enabling a discussion about the disease that affected them, as well as the guidelines adopted by the team.

To exercise knowledge in practice, promote access to anatomical pieces for the answers to macroscopic changes used during an autopsy, in addition to the analysis of the slides applied for the purpose of understanding and discussing how microscopic changes caused by the disease.

Don't miss this unique opportunity!

The time has come to improve your surgical skills with this team of highly qualified and renowned plastic surgeons! Learn the techniques and theory behind sutures that combine functionality and aesthetics trough practice on animal models that resemble human skin, with a very dynamic, high-level approach! Then you will also have the opportunity to learn the theory behind skin flaps and skin grafts by practicing those important techniques, commonly used in reconstructive plastic surgery, on the same models! Come to this workshop to improve your plastic surgery skills or to learn for the first time about sutures, skin flaps and skin grafts, very important techniques required during the medical graduation and in many sub-specialties after it.

Trauma - Day 2
Place: Clínica Dr. Sun (Rua Pedro de Toledo, 980 - cj 35 - Vila Clementino)

Hemorrhage is the main treatable cause of death from trauma. The majority of the medical world addresses ABC's mnemonic by ATLS when it comes to primary survey in trauma care. One of the trickiest stages is the letter C from Circulation. That’s why The American College of Surgeons has started the Stop the Bleed Program to train people all over the world on how to stop the life-threatening bleeding in a severely injured person.

Our workshop aims to teach to the future emergency physician a little bit more about it. You will learn effective techniques to stop the external bleeding such as how to apply a tourniquet, but also how to use an ultrasound exam to diagnose an internal occult bleeding.

Don’t miss this chance to learn more about something so important and that can save many lives!

From exploratory laparoscopic to extremely complex colonic, gastric, pancreatic or even though hepatic surgeries, video surgery has developed as an important technique that involves many procedures. Considering the importance of a technique that is minimally invasive, such as video surgery, and that has advantages such as decreased infection rates, faster recovery and better aesthetic outcome with smaller scars, this workshop offers you the opportunity to practice the techniques with real instrumentation. This amazing “hands on” workshop will be carried out in mini laparoscopy racks to enhance your psycho-motor skills, helping you to understand surgical procedures in a different reality. You will also be able to simulate a real video surgery developing a procedure with the guidance of a camera and a television and performing by yourself laparoscopic sutures and surgical knots. If you consider a career in surgery, you cannot miss this training!

Surgical practices in animal model - Day 2 (only for 3rd to 6th year students)
Place: TOCE (Ed. Leitão da Cunha) - Rua Bocutatu, 740

Some of the best surgeons believe that practice in animal models with similar anatomy is the most effective way to learn surgical techniques. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to do several procedures, such as chest drainage, nephrectomy and more, by yourself. The future physicians will also be thought how to instrument in surgeries, while being supervised by experienced surgeons.

The BRAINCOMS committee acknowledges the importance of all animal lives, therefore, this workshop will have limitations as to who can participate, based solely on those that will make the most out of the experience. Only students from the third grade up will be allowed to participate in this activity.

All procedures will be guided by the ethical laws about the use of animal models in medical learning (law nº 11.794/2008).
