Originally published in 1961, the book “The Concept of Law”, by H. L. Hart, is one of the classics texts in contemporary legal theory, being one of the most influential works ever produced to date and an inescapable theoretical landmark for the understanding of modern law. Thus, in 2021, the year in which the work complete 60 years since its initial publication, the symposium “The End of Jurisprudence” intends to debate the extent to which this project of an analytical theory of law, such as presented by Hart, can adequately answer some of the most urgent questions of the first decades of the 21 century, which involve, among other topics, the crisis of liberal democracies, the growth of poverty and struggles for recognition of various vulnerable groups (such as indigenous, women, black people, homosexuals, persons with disabilities, among many others). If this type of theory cannot present answers to these questions, then it’s necessary to ask the following question: what is the point of a theory of law that does not seek to answer some of the main questions and problems of our time?
The symposium will be held on 03.11.21, originally in English, with simultaneous translation into Portuguese.

Publicada originalmente em 1961, a obra “O Conceito de Direito” de H. L. A. Hart é um dos clássicos da teoria contemporânea do direito, sendo uma das obras mais influentes até hoje produzidas e um pressuposto inafastável para a compreensão do direito moderno. Em 2021, ano em que a obra completa 60 anos, o simpósio “O Fim da Jurisprudence” pretende debater em que medida o projeto de teoria analítica do direito, inaugurado por Hart, pode responder adequadamente às questões mais urgentes da primeira metade do século XXI, as quais envolvem, dentre outras, crise das democracias liberais, crescimento da pobreza e lutas por reconhecimento de diversos grupos vulnerabilizados (indígenas, mulheres, negros, homossexuais, pessoas com deficiência etc.). Caso não possa, qual o sentido de uma teoria do direito que não se propõe a responder aos principais problemas do nosso tempo?
