Changing the Culture in English Language Classrooms: Creating Space for Communication

Because speaking is a skill which is usually neglected by English teachers in their classrooms, the presenters will demonstrate simple communicative activities in English to promote speaking in the target language so students have an opportunity to develop their speaking skills in the João Pessoa public schools.

Through its diplomatic mission in Brazil, the U.S. Government invests institutional, financial, and human resources towards improving the quality of English language teaching in Brazil, with special emphasis on public education at all levels. To this end, the U.S. Department of State offers a variety resources and opportunities for teachers of English in Brazil. This session will describe the programs and resources made available to teachers of English, with the goal of assisting teachers with classroom techniques and motivation of their students.

During this talk, the presenter will share with participants some reflections on English Teacher Education/Development research and the UFPB's Letras curriculum. Participants will also have a chance to learn more about institutional projects aimed at strengthening the partnership between the university and regular schools and about how the practicum is structured at UFPB.

During this session, the Director of the João Pessoa Foreign Language Center (CELEST) will provide an overview of the Center in terms of its history, its mission, and its goals. He will describe CELEST’s role as a supplement and complement to the traditional language training offered by municipal and state institutions and share his ideas about how CELEST can grow to have a greater impact on foreign language learning in the City of João Pessoa.

It is very important for English teachers to continue learning English throughout their careers. And it is also important for students to keep studying outside the classroom. A Language Learning Project (LLP) is a very efficient plan to keep both teachers and students studying on their own. During this presentation, teachers will learn how to create their own LLPs and how to motivate their students to create theirs as well. When we think of listening practice, most of activities we do in class don’t actually focus on listening; instead, they involve grammar, vocabulary and reading. Given this gap, the purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate some practical ways to conduct listening activities in a student- centered approach. The presenter’s aim is to have teachers understand the student-centered nature of the guided discovery approach and how to use it as a tool to develop learners' autonomy as well as active participation in the learning process. We will be presenting two micro classes, one based on Deductive Teaching and the other based on Inductive Teaching. Then we will discuss with the audience the main differences between the approaches and focus on the advantages and effectiveness of using Guided Discovery to introduce new material in class. Given all the difficulties that language teachers face in the classroom, I will propose ideas and demonstrate activities to help teachers deliver more engaging and student-centered classes focusing on the use of “Icebreakers.” An “icebreaker” is a language learning activity used to introduce people to each other so that they feel more relaxed together. Participants in this session will practice some basic English and get to know one another in a relaxed, fun environment. In this workshop, teachers are introduced to Extensive Reading and how a small-scale regimen can be incorporated into English Classes. The presentation covers basic explanations and principles of extensive reading and then goes into participatory activities for teachers to introduce and show their students how to enjoy reading in English. Teachers have the chance to experience the activities and ask questions as a lead-up to a discussion of how to implement this type of program to individual classrooms. Getting your students to read and enjoy it might seem too good to be true, but come and see before you decide.

The presenters will demonstrate a communicative way of teaching vocabulary using the Wordscapes material provided by the U.S. Consulate-General in Recife. The Wordscapes material contains illustrated posters to be used both to introduce and to practice new words, creating an active and motivating atmosphere in the classroom. Three activities will be presented: the “Object Search Activity” to introduce a new word, the “Word First Activity” to reinforce learning, and the “Chain Story” for additional oral practice. Gifts will be given at the end of the presentation for the winners of a BINGO activity. We will demonstrate activities from “The Monster Book” published by the U.S. Department of State that can liven up the language learned in the classroom and engage students in learning. Sometimes teachers forget to bring fun into their classrooms, and so we want to show that it is possible to teach writing through fun activities that are really easy to prepare and can have a wide range of variation. Songs in English are an effective teaching/learning tool because when they are included in the curriculum, students are more motivated to participate in class. Learning through songs is more joyful and efficient than memorizing; furthermore, songs have a whole context of culture and grammar to be developed. During this session, the presenters will demonstrate how the song Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton can be used to learn new vocabulary, to explore the use of prefixes, to encourage students to communicate with each other in English, and to practice listening skills. Teachers will also learn how using student-centered, communicative activities can improve the group dynamics in their classrooms. In this session, we will discuss teaching reading in public school English classrooms using the Communicative Approach.
