E NENHUM PÁSSARO CANTA: CONSCIÊNCIA AMBIENTAL E A POLÍTICA DO DESENVOLVIMENTO NO CONTEXTO INDIANO - OS IMPACTOS DO DISCURSO DO DESENVOLVIMENTO SOBRE A NATUREZA HUMANA E A NÃO HUMANA

À medida que a civilização cresce em riqueza e complexidade, perde a simplicidade de sua ordem inicial. O intelecto se elevou e se ampliou, mas a intuição diminuiu ou recuou, de acordo com os corações dos místicos (homens santos) e de seus adeptos. Sobre essas questões, uma demanda maior vem sendo imposta ao o sistema e ordens científicas e sobre toda a vida, a mente e o espírito e sua inundação livre do conhecimento intuitivo. Esses últimos foram forçados a funcionar de formas interrompidas. Em linhas gerais, a sociedade tornou-se mais artificial e complexa, menos livre e nobre com mais de um laço sobre o indivíduo e menos um campo para o crescimento das faculdades humanas e espirituais. A antiga harmonia deu lugar a um estresse exagerado sobre os fatores elementares da vida. Artha (propósito) e kama (atração dos sentidos) passaram a ser desenvolvidos à custa do dharma (o princípio da ordem cósmica). (Sri Aurobindo, As Fundações da Cultura Indiana, p.117).

Minha apresentação consiste muito mais em desenvolver uma percepção do que simplesmente recorrer a uma reiteração de questões ou análises e estatísticas. Todos nós, reunidos aqui, estamos genuinamente preocupados com o destino do nosso planeta e a situação do ser humano no presente. Portanto, essa ideia não está deslocada do pensamento de que precisamos reconhecer as diferenças e a coexistência de multiplicidades em culturas, línguas e nacionalidades.

AND NO BIRDS SING: ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE POLITICS OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE INDIAN CONTEXT - THE IMPACT OF THE DISCOURSE OF DEVELOPMENT ON HUMAN AND NON-HUMAN NATURE

As the civilisation grew in richness and complexity, it lost indeed the first grand simplicity of its early order. The intellect towered and widened, but intuition waned or retreated into the hearts of the saints and adepts and mystics. A greater stress came to be laid on scientific system, accuracy and order, not only in all the things of the life and mind, but even in the things of the spirit; the free flood of intuitive knowledge was forced to run in hewn channels. Society became more artificial and complex, less free and noble; more of a bond on the individual, it was less a field for the growth of his spiritual faculties. The old fine integral harmony gave place to an exaggerated stress on one or other of its elemental factors. Artha and k?ma, interest and desire were in some directions developed at the expense of the dharma. (Sri Aurobindo, The Foundations of Indian Culture, p.117)

My presentation would focus more on evolving a perception than merely resorting to a reiteration of issues or analysis and statistics. All of us assembled here are genuinely concerned with the fate of our planet and the situation of the human being in the present. And it might not be out of place to underscore the fact that we need to recognize differences and the coexistence of multiplicities— in cultures, languages and nationalities.
